Despite being a graduate of the Red Bull academy and one of their current reserve drivers, Liam Lawson is currently racing in the Japanese single-seater Super Formula series. He wants to remain actively involved in motorsport should an F1 opportunity present itself. In Sunday’s race at Autopolis, Liam Lawson secured his second victory in just four starts, propelling himself into the championship lead.

Lawson’s recent triumph arrives at a moment coinciding with Nyck de Vries facing scrutiny due to his challenging start as a rookie in F1. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko is reportedly eager to witness an improvement in form from the Dutch driver. He has given him an ultimatum to deliver stronger performances.

Lawson has addressed rumors of possibly replacing the Dutchman at AlphaTauri. He said, “I want to finish the year and fight for the championship, and that will give me the best opportunity for next year. In terms of what’s happening [in F1]… it’s completely outside of my control. I am just happy to win today.”

The Kiwi remains focused on his primary goal of clinching the Super Formula title. He aims to position himself favorably for a potential seat with AlphaTauri in 2024. He recognizes that achieving success in the Super Formula championship will significantly bolster his chances of securing an F1 opportunity with the team. Lawson’s determination to excel in Super Formula showcases his ambition and long-term aspirations.

Lawson made his debut in the F2 Championship in 2021. Competing for the Hitech Grand Prix team, he showcased impressive skills and quickly made a name for himself in the series. In his debut season, Lawson demonstrated consistency and speed, regularly battling at the front of the grid.

Lawson’s ability to handle pressure and deliver strong performances in various weather conditions further highlighted his potential. Not only did Lawson exhibit his race-winning abilities, but he also displayed consistent podium finishes throughout the season. His strong points-scoring consistency caught the eye of several.

A change could be on the cards because of Lawson’s impressive showings and Nyck de Vries’ poor start to his F1 career. This is because of how fickle the Red Bull management is with their juniors. They have frequently changed drivers in the past, and if the Dutchman does not show improvement, Lawson might make his F1 debut.
