Logan Sargeant is the first F1 driver from the United States of America in years, and the first American to score points in the 21st century. Sargeant made his debut with Williams after a promising F2 campaign, partnering Alex Albon.
Sargeant being from the North American continent in a sport dominated and driven primarily by Europeans comes with its challenges. Sargeant claims that as an American, people expect less performances from him though he has grown accustomed to paying no mind to it.
I think people think and expect less from an American driver. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter, because as long as the people who matter sort of know what's going on, and know what you're capable of, that's all that matters.Logan Sargeant said, as reported by autosport.com
Sargeant extended his contract with Williams for 2024, despite a disappointing 2023 campaign. Williams team principal James Vowles has explicitly expressed his confidence in the young driver, keeping him on to prove himself in 2024.
Logan Sargeant cites Alex Albon as reference point to improve performance
Logan Sargeant joined Williams in 2023 partnering with Alex Albon, but was unable to perform at all against his teammate. Sargeant and Albon’s disparity in a performance led to criticism of the young American and rumors of his departure from Williams ahead of 2024.
Sargeant disproved his critics with a point scored at his second home race in Austin. Williams re-signed Sargeant for 2024, and the 23-year-old thanked Alex Albon for his contribution to his improvement. Sargeant wrote in his column on the F1 website that having Albon as a reference is instrumental to better his results.
It’s great to have my team mate Alex Albon as such a good reference. It shows me the places I need to work on and again, that’s something that isn’t always the easiest to do in season as you’re so caught up in the mix.Logan Sargeant wrote on his column at formula1.com
Sargeant managed only one of Williams’ 28 points scored in 2023 and will be hoping to improve his results in 2024. With many junior drivers waiting in the wings, Sargeant will be forced to watch his back to retain his seat.
