Nyck de Vries made his F1 debut with AlphaTauri in 2023. The Dutch driver shifted to the Red Bull camp to get the chance to race at the pinnacle of motorsport. However, things did not go well for the former Formula E champion. The 28-year-old was sacked after just ten races. Now, Williams’ Logan Sargeant has expressed his thoughts over de Vries’ exit.

Sargeant mentioned that he believes that a rookie must get at least one whole season to prove themselves in Formula 1. The American driver insisted that Nyck de Vries was making progress after a rough start to his debut season. He told Total-Motorsport.com, “In my opinion, you should get a full season to prove yourself. From my point of view, he was moving in the right direction.”

Logan Sargeant claimed that the Dutch driver was showing promise in his last few races before AlphaTauri decided to fire the 28-year-old. As such, Sargeant was disappointed with the team’s call to sack Nyck de Vries. The American driver believed that it was hard on de Vries. The Williams driver said, “I thought he was starting to drive really well. So yeah, I thought it was really unfortunate and a little bit harsh.”

The American driver was promoted to the Williams F1 seat for 2023 after delivering solid results in F2. Sargeant partnered with Alex Albon at the Grove-based team. However, the 22-year-old has failed to match his teammate so far this season. Logan Sargeant has not scored any points this year compared to Albon’s tally of 21 points.

Rumors have surfaced that Mick Schumacher is known to be in contention to replace Sargeant. The German driver is currently serving as the reserve for Mercedes, with the Silver Arrows keen on having Schumacher return on the grid with Williams. As such, Logan Sargeant would need to improve his performance to ensure his stay at the Grove-based team.

Thus, Logan Sargeant believes AlphaTauri’s decision to replace Nyck de Vries was harsh. The American driver insisted that any driver making their debut in F1 would need one full season to prove their worth on the grid. However, Sargeant would be looking to focus on the remainder of his 2023 season as he still awaits a new contract with Williams.
