The 2024 season is just around the corner and ahead of it, the Pirelli boss, Mario Isola, has made his frustration known with F1 and FIA’s decision to ditch the qualifying tire allocation format. At some events last year, teams were required to use hard, medium, and, soft compounds in Q1, Q2, and, Q3 respectively.

The move was done in 2023 to reduce the number of compounds that get used during a Grand Prix weekend. However, during the campaign, several drivers and teams raised concerns regarding the format.

Keeping everything in view, the decision-makers have decided to move on from the alternative tire allocation format, but this has not sat well with Mario Isola. While talking about the decision with GP Racing, he recently said, (H/T: Soymotor)

We had a very good classification. So the decision to abandon this format, for me, was not the right one. I think that if the direction for the future is to reduce the carbon footprint of the championship, we have to accept losing something.

Looking at the reaction of Isola, it is quite clear that he is extremely disappointed with the F1 and FIA’s decision. Moreover, to put more weight behind his argument, he has made it known that to move toward sustainability, compromises are necessary in certain areas.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen has always been against the tire allocation format

While the alternative tire allocation format has been thrown out of the window ahead of the 2024 F1 season, the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen has always been against it. During the 2023 campaign, he expressed his displeasure with it.

As per GP Blog reports back then, he said,

I don't think it's necessary. It doesn't really change anything at all. The faster cars are still in front.

The Dutchman is quite right in his assessment as despite the alternative tire allocation, there was no drastic change in the qualifying results. The top teams were still seen leading the pack in comparison to the lesser outfits.

The 2024 season is slated to kick off on the 29th of February and the excitement ahead of it, has already started to build. Red Bull is going into the season as the out-and-out favorite, but the lights of Mercedes and Ferrari could pose a mighty challenge.

The upcoming season could finally prove to the campaign, in which, Red Bull is made to sweat for scoring grand prix wins. They scored 21 victories last year and considering this, it will be fascinating to see how many they are able to put on board this time around.
