Sergio Perez who races for Red Bull Racing has won only 2 races in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan. The Mexican driver could not challenge his teammate Max Verstappen in the same machinery who won 10 races in a row and a total of 19 of the 22 races.
F1 pundit Mark Gallagher has stated that he feels bad for Perez. Gallagher pointed out that team personnel including Christian Horner should mention that the Mexican driver could win the world title. However, it is clear that the 33-year-old has failed to match Max Verstappen as his teammate for the past three seasons.
I feel so sorry for Sergio Perez for one reason, and that is that he and people around him, and from time to time, the way that perhaps Christian [Horner] needs to talk about him, they insinuate that he may have an opportunity to win the World Championship. He doesn’t.Mark Gallagher said on the Flat Chat Podcast (H&T: PlanetF1)
Gallagher claimed that Sergio Perez had virtually no chance of fighting for the F1 championship unless Max Verstappen was injured. So much so, that the F1 pundit reckoned that the Dutch driver would have to miss most of the season for Perez to win a title.
He doesn’t have the opportunity to win the World Championship, unless Max was injured, God forbid, and missed most of the season.
2024 could be the make-or-break season for Sergio Perez
Sergio Perez was fighting for podiums against the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari whereas his teammate Max Verstappen was fighting for new records by winning back-to-back races. The Red Bull RB-19 was the most dominant car on the grid. However, Perez got 285 points compared to Verstappen achieved 575 points.
Perez also known as the ‘King of the Streets’ could only finish in eighth place at the Singapore GP. A track where it is expected that the Mexican would get a decent result. On the other hand, Max Verstappen salvaged a Top 5 result at a circuit where he struggles every year.
Sergio Perez’s inconsistent results in 2023 highlight that the 33-year-old needs to step up his game for the 2024 season. This could allow the Mexican driver to challenge Verstappen in the same machinery and for the world championship.
Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have dismissed any chances of a rivalry at Milton Keynes. Verstappen has dominated the sport in recent years with Checo playing a supporting role. However, the Dutch driver refused an instruction to allow Perez to pass on the last lap of the Brazilian GP in 2022 which infuriated the Mexican. As such, it remains to be seen how the relationship between the two evolves this year.
