Carlos Sainz is currently fourth in the Drivers Standings and despite earning a well-deserved win in Silverstone, former Formula One driver Martin Brundle believes Ferrari is soon going to pull the plug and ask Sainz to top fighting Charles Leclerc.

Brundle has a wealth of experience in the sport and is well aware that if Ferrari wants to challenge for the Drivers Championship, then they have to make tough decisions and one of those decisions would be to give priority status to the Monegasque.

Charles Leclerc is second in the Championship after 11 rounds and is only 38 points behind Max Verstappen. Moreover, Brundle believes because of the DNFs that the Italian has had so far in the season, the fans have been denied the chance of witnessing a tight battle.

While stressing about the same, Brundle wrote, “Max calmly and skilfully leads the championship by 38 points over Charles but that could have been so different if Ferrari had been more reliable such as in Spain and Azerbaijan, or sharper on strategies such as in Monaco and Britain.”

Max of course had two retirements in the first three races but Leclerc’s pace throughout has been deeply impressive, and if you wear a neutral F1 cap we are so far being denied another cliffhanger of a championship.”

Charles Leclerc could soon get the nod ahead of Carlos Sainz

Charles Leclerc came away with the victory in Austria and closed the gap to Max Verstappen, but on the other hand, Carlos Sainz had a DNF and lost out on valuable points.

After Austria, the Spaniard is 37 points adrift of Leclerc in the Championship, and as things stand it is looking more and more like Verstappen and Leclerc are going to fight for the title this season.

Brundle has stated that because of the points deficit between Leclerc and the trailing Sainz, Ferrari could soon make the Monegasque their number 1 priority for the season.

The Ferrari is fragile and Sainz’s power unit blow-up was bodywork shattering, followed by a very expensive fire in this cost cap era.”

Fresh from his inaugural victory at Silverstone, Sainz was absolutely gutted, a guaranteed at least second place gone up in smoke.”

As we move into the second half of the season the trailing Ferrari team must be close to calling off the battle between their two drivers and he will be aware of this.”

It was a very painful and sad moment for him championship-wise.”

Charles Leclerc has been the more consistent driver at Ferrari this season and after looking at Brundle’s assessment, it seems the Brit’s prediction could soon prove right as there are only 11 races left in the season.

Carlos has managed to win only one Grand Prix this year whereas Charles has got three victories to his name. Who do you think should be given priority at the Maranello-based team going ahead into the season?
