Martin Brundle and Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez is currently going through a rough phase at the pinnacle of motor racing, and Sky Sports Analyst Martin Brundle has shared his opinion on it. According to him, despite the Mexican driver going through a torrid time in F1, he would not be sacked by Christian Horner and company.

The last few events have been one to forget for Sergio Perez for many reasons. He has struggled passively in keeping pace with his Champion teammate Max Verstappen and has been quite average in the qualifiers. He is under pressure at Red Bull, and the team expects him to start performing regularly from Austria onward.

Martin Brundle being an expert on all things F1, has talked about the woes of Perez via his official Sky Sports blog. He wrote, “The team’s perfect scenario would be Sergio to finish a close second to Max every race, and win when Max can’t. The trouble is that, as Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon found out, fine young drivers get buried alongside the Dutchman’s speed.”

Brundle feels Red Bull’s rivals are making significant progress, and the team will need Sergio Perez on his A-game in the upcoming races. He added, “At the same time, Red Bull can’t have Perez off form when Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin inevitably home in on them. That’s why they’ll support him all the way.”

While Sergio Perez, with his recent performances, has made it extremely difficult for him to win the 2023 Drivers Championship, there is still a slight chance. As things stand, the 33-year-old is 69 points behind Max Verstappen with 14 races remaining on the F1 calendar. He has so far managed to amass 126 points.

However, for Perez to close the gap to Verstappen at the top, he would need to start churning in spectacular performances regularly. Everyone is aware of the might of the 25-year-old in the RB19, and it will take something special from Perez to have a serious go at this year’s Championship.

Considering everything, would it be possible for Sergio Perez to come out of his terrible run of form and start challenging the reigning World Champion regularly? The Austrian GP is just around the corner, and Perez’s performance at the event would give a good indicator for what fans can expect in the reminder of 2023.
