Martin Brundle finds the silver lining for Ferrari: ‘They continue to support each other despite all the mistakes’

Martin Brundle has been around the sport for many a years and seen the highest of highs and the lowest of low but it would be even difficult for him to comprehend what’s going with Ferrari on and off the race track. A team which has the potential to win both the respective championships, is struggling to even get on the podium. We saw that both in France and Hungary where Ferrari squandered their chance to capitalize.

A win was there for the taking in Hungary after Red Bull’s struggles earlier in the week. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were starting from P10 and P11 on the grid respectively, handing over the initiative to Ferrari on a circuit which is notoriously difficult to overtake. It all started well for Ferrari as they enjoyed a brilliant first half but unfortunately lost their way to finally end their weekend with heartbreak.

Despite of what has been going on the track, the Italian Giants have been able to keep the unity intact. We saw an example of that in Charles Leclerc’s post crash interview in France. The Monegasque driver looked completely in control at Paul Ricard but lost the rear, which at first looked like a technical problem, to crash into the barriers. But, irrespective of what the reason was, Charles took full responsibility of the incident.

Martin Brundle appreciates Ferrari’s spirt to stick together in such difficult times

This could be a PR move or it could sheer team spirit but Ferrari has been able to keep it together in times of adversity. Martin Brundle appreciating this aspect said, “A lot of the pit stop activity was driven to cover off the recovering Verstappen. Ferrari were still busy reacting and on lap 39 they pitted Leclerc. He either had to take soft tyres which wouldn’t last until the end of the race, or the hard compound tyres which had looked pretty dire on other cars.

They fitted the hards and consigned Leclerc to P6 whilst sliding all over the place. The Ferrari team keep it tight and support each other on these reasonably frequent errors of late, but however you paint it they somehow navigated a fast car from second and third on the grid to finish fourth and sixth.”

“That was all compounded by surprisingly poor pace on the soft compound tyres on a cool day with constant spots of rain around, but the medium/medium strategy pitting for the second time a little over half distance made no sense.

Martin Brundle might be right when he talks about the team spirit at Ferrari but at the same time, it shows that the team from Italy don’t have the stomach to make a decisive call in a tensed situation, which is something that definitely needs to be looked at.
