The Monaco GP in the F1 calendar has been one of the most, if not, the most historic racing destination ever in the history of Formula 1. Ever since the sport’s inception, the historic destination has stayed on its calendar for the drivers to race around. Hence, over recent questions of F1 dropping the historic location, Martin Brundle has expressed his discontent.
The British presenter reckoned that the sport had many ‘jewel’ like racing destinations on the calendar now. However, Brundle recalled his racing days and highlighted that Monaco back then was the only jewel. Moreover, the current racing calendars have many such tracks such as Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, and so on.
I think we’ve got many jewels in our crown now, When I used to race, Monaco was the only jewel, and now you’ve got these incredible venues like Singapore and Abu Dhabi and Jeddah and Bahrain and Miami and Vegas and so on and so forth.Brundle told Sky Sports F1.
The Monaco GP has had many race restarts and red flags during the races in the past. Hence, this made the Monaco GP very unpredictable and increased excitement for the race. Although Brundle did acknowledge the fact that the race got boring at times, he claimed that F1 needed to think very carefully before dropping the historic location of the Monaco GP.
Sometimes you get a wet race at Monaco or a Safety Car or a red flag that completely energizes that race, but I do get that it can be boring on race day, so qualifying is more exciting. I think Formula 1 does and should think very carefully before it would drop Monaco.
Martin Brundle comments on Mercedes’ winless 2023 campaign
Mercedes suffered from a disappointing season in 2023 despite finishing an impressive P2 in the constructor’s championship. Brundle commented on the status quo and claimed that the Brackley was not the force that they once were, recalling the domination days from Mercedes back in 2014.
The 2023 challenger from Mercedes, the W14 produced major issues to the drivers during races and failed to produce good results in races. Hence, the car was highly denigrated by people on the grid as the Brackley decided to re-use an old concept from 2022 in the new car for this season. As a result, Brundle reckoned that this was the reason Mercedes failed to perform well and score a comfortable finish in the season.
However, as the team continues development over the winter break, the Team Principal Toto Wolff has highlighted his plans of having a more ‘conventional’ way of developing the W15 for the next season. The drivers have also showcased optimism about the development of the car, and aim at a potential championship contention in the 2024 season.
