During the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, Max Verstappen’s RB18 which was plagued with DRS issues sparked a prolonged battle between the Red Bull Racing driver and Mercedes’ George Russell. Former Formula One driver Jan Lammers describes the battle as a masterclass in how to deal with each other on the track.

After qualifying, Red Bull had rechecked and finally repaired the rear wing of Verstappen’s car. On Sunday, it quickly became apparent that the DRS was again not working optimally. The problems seemed to be with the activation of the opening rear wing.

Due to a flaw in his RB18, Verstappen appeared to lack the tempo on the straight to launch an offensive. He lost P2 after his blunder in Turn 4 and was locked behind Russell. And, without DRS, he was “stuck” there.

The Spanish Grand Prix bore witness to the first battle between Red Bull Racing driver and reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen and newly recruited Mercedes driver George Russell. Lammers made sure to enjoy this tussle between the two Formula One drivers to the optimum.

“Fortunately it gave nice fights with Russell, because we haven’t seen them before. They did ten years ago on the kart track. It was wonderful to see and I really thought it was a masterclass of how to deal with each other and how to let each other live,” said the Dutch former racing driver and team principal.

Christian Horner and Helmut Marko of Red Bull believe the DRS impairment is connected to the RB18’s weight-loss scheme. Too many extreme measures may have been considered in constructing lightweight parts for the RB18, resulting in these parts being insufficiently durable. According to reports, there were numerous fractures and crevasses in the wing even after qualifying.
