‘Max can retire sooner than we all think’: Helmut Marko believes Max Verstappen not one to ‘chase records’

Red Bull had a dull period in F1 but Max Verstappen has come as a breath of fresh air for the Milton Keynes outfit. Winning his first Grand Prix at the ripe age of 18 set the benchmark for the things to come. To be fair, the reigning world champion has not disappointed one bit. There were huge expectations on his shoulders ever since he entered F1 but Max has been unfazed by that and gone about his business in his own way.

Max Verstappen has 30 wins and 72 podiums to his name in Red Bull colors, placing him behind Sebastian Vettel’s remarkable record of 53 wins and 122 podiums. The German was absolutely a beast during his stint for Red Bull from 2009-14. But then it went downhill for the four time world champion and he decided to make a move to Ferrari in 2015.

The Dutchman, Max Verstappen, is at the peak of powers and has the potential to demolish every record if Red Bull provides him with a competitive car. But, the reigning world champion has never been one of the driver who wants to chase records. He has time and again mentioned that he might want to retire after his contract with Red Bull comes to an end, which would be quite a shame.

Red Bull’s advisor dropped some major speculation when he said, “We want to win more titles together. But I doubt if we will see Max drive until he has broken all records.”

“He could make it, but he’s also the type of person who packs his things and leaves when he no longer feels like it. No matter how much you offer him, he won’t stay. And that could happen sooner than we all think.”

Talking about his ability behind the wheel, Marko said, “Max doesn’t need a build-up phase to be at the limit right away. He can go full steam straight away. That’s just the incredible natural talent, which results in an exceptional base speed.”

We would want the Dutchman to go on and break every possible record. But, there is a possibility that this might not happen after what Helmut Marko has said. For now, we can only enjoy the mesmeric brilliance of the reigning world champion in that RB-18.
