The Dutchman Max Verstappen won the recent sprint weekend at the American Circuit. This win totaled the sprint wins this season to three races out of the five held so far. Verstappen has even won 15 out of the 18 races held this season and dominated the grid. After winning so many races in a singular season, it is obvious to not feel the same satisfaction from the wins. However, Verstappen reckoned that this feeling of dissatisfaction is only for the Sprint races.
The champion claimed that he did not get any satisfaction in winning the sprint races. Changes to the sprint format might still deter the world champion from the sprint race. The Dutch driver talked about the feelings that the drivers get after winning a sprint race and called it disappointing.
There's no satisfaction to win a sprint for me, You cross the line and say: 'All right, well, tomorrow is the race, the main one'. That's how it goes.Verstappen told motorsport.com
Verstappen claimed that he believed in the ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it’ mentality and felt that F1 should adhere to the same thought. He added that F1 does not need the sprint race format if cars are performing at par with each other. Finally, the champion claimed that FIA should get rid of the sprint weekend and allow the constructors to set up their cars normally.
I always say why do we need to try and invent something? I think our product works, if you just make sure that the cars are competitive and they will stay the same for a long time. I think we should just get rid of the sprint weekend and then everyone can just set up their cars normally.
Max Verstappen feared an ill-reception at Mexico City GP
The dominant driver isn’t worried about the controversies regarding the reception of the team in Mexico City. The team has faced a lot of backlash from the North American fan base due to Helmut Marko‘s comments about Sergio Perez as well as the stint involving Verstappen and Perez; where Perez failed to finish P2 in the title championship due to Max Verstappen.
Verstappen felt safe ahead of the Mexico City GP due to the added security measures for the racer. The champion enjoyed the Helmet Reveal mobile event of Sergio Perez and had a fun time with the Mexican crowd. He even enjoyed the marketing day with Checo in Mexico City ahead of the weekend. However, Verstappen will still be guarded by multiple bodyguards with him.
With four races remaining on the calendar, Verstappen is in a comfortable position and just needs to enjoy his last few races before the long season break. The RB20 development is already in full swing for the next season. The Dutchman has shown amazing results and it will be exciting to watch what the next season awaits for Formula 1.
