There was a lot of friction between Max Verstappen and his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase a.k.a GP, this weekend in Belgium. First seen in the qualifying, where GP put down Verstappen, another radio incident happened today in the race.

Verstappen pushed his new set of softs hard to get the fastest lap with less than half of the race remaining. As he had a comfortable lead, the team didn’t want him to pit again unnecessarily. “This tyre had reasonable degradation in the first stint. I’d ask you to use your head a bit more,” GP said.

Verstappen, known for being a bit cocky, had an amusing reply to this. He said, “I could also push on, and we do another stop? A little bit of pit stop training.” Post-race, Verstappen clarified that he and the team have a very good relationship. He said that he just likes to pull their leg and already knew that the team would not want to make another pit stop.

“I know the team doesn‘t like to do another stop, but I like to mention it, so they might get a bit nervous. And I like the response [we are not doing that today]. We know each other very well; we have a very good relationship,” said Verstappen.

Red Bull finished with yet another double podium today in Belgium. Max Verstappen finished P1, with Sergio Perez finishing P2. After another race with similar results, Red Bull principal Christian Horner replied to fans calling F1 ‘boring’.

Christian Horner said that while predictable results are not welcome by the fans, Red Bull is in the process of creating history, and this is an important part of F1’s legacy. He compared their situation to McLaren in 1988, whose legendary eleven-consecutive win record they have recently broken.

I know it might not be popular with the fans because it’s predictable, but we’re just focused on trying to extract the best that we can. And it’s a very special moment for this team because it’s historic, 1988 was the last time that anything like this was achieved,” said Horner.

Red Bull goes into the summer break with a massive 256-point lead over Mercedes in the constructor standings. Having consistently delivered such solid performances, the team will look forward to recharging their batteries and returning for the Dutch GP on 27th August.
