The cancellation of the Imola Grand Prix due to severe floods has sparked discussions about alternative venues for Formula 1 races. While the possibility of returning to Imola later this year has been ruled out by Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, many voices have emerged in favor of a return to the Tuscan hills. Among those advocating for a comeback is the reigning Formula 1 champion, Max Verstappen.

In 2020, Formula 1 raced at the Tuscan Grand Prix, an event that will be remembered for its chaotic nature and dramatic crashes that left only 12 cars crossing the finish line. Unfortunately for Verstappen, his race lasted a mere two corners before a chain reaction at the start forced him into early retirement. Despite this misfortune, Max Verstappen still appreciates the circuit’s appeal.

Verstappen voiced his enthusiasm for a return to the Tuscan track, saying, “Bring Mugello back then, the circuit is very nice to drive on.” Despite his limited experience at Mugello, he found the track highly enjoyable and expressed his optimism about its potential.

While Formula 1’s expansion plans have primarily targeted the Middle East and America, Verstappen sees opportunities in the United States and particularly the Road America but bears in mind the overtaking difficulty there for current generation cars. Nevertheless, it “is certainly possible; we also drive in Monaco, don’t we? There are a few nice options in America.” As the sport aims to diversify its global presence and potentially rotate the schedule, Verstappen suggested Road America in Wisconsin as an attractive option for a new race.

Acknowledging the challenges of adapting Road America to Formula 1 standards, Verstappen noted, “Road America is of course quite fast for F1. But like any circuit that hosts Formula 1 races, they would of course have to make certain adjustments to the circuit.” Recognizing the track’s high-speed nature, he emphasized the need for modifications to accommodate the demands of F1 cars. Nevertheless, Verstappen remained intrigued by the idea of racing at Road America.

Leading the championship standings this season, Verstappen’s remarkable form has made him and his Red Bull team the favorites for the title. Having clinched victory in every race so far, he aims to extend his lead over teammate Sergio Perez at the upcoming race in Monaco. The return to Tuscany and the addition of new races in America are possibilities that excite fans and drivers alike. Still, only time will tell which venues make their way onto the coveted Formula 1 calendar.
