The reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, faced a gearbox issue on Friday which cut short his first practice session. Max could could only put in 7 laps on his home track before he was forced to make his way into the pits. His team mate, Sergio Perez, also struggled to get that RB-18 going as he finished P7 almost a second slower than the leader, George Russell.

FP2 was nothing different as both the Red Bull drivers looked a mile off the pace while Mercedes and McLaren made a comeback of sorts. The Silver Arrows and Papaya Orange caught everyone by surprise with the kind of pace that they showed in the two practice sessions. This could make things tougher for the Milton Keynes outfit who would be looking to continue from where they left off at the Belgian GP.

But, it’s going to be tough as the circuit prefers cars with higher downforce specifications. The RB-18 is known for its incredible straight line speed as we saw at Spa but struggles when it comes to cornering speed. This could be a problem for the Milton Keynes as the Zandvoort circuit is full of high and medium speed corners, which in turn could present an opportunity for the rest of the pace to make up some ground.

David Coulthard is not worried about how things have played out for Max on the first day. He said, “Well, of course there’s a huge expectation ahead of every Grand Prix, especially when you come off the back of something like we saw in Spa.

But the reality of course is that – we already knew, the circuit, different challenge, different possibilities – and we’re already seeing that of course it’s not going to be as straightforward as we saw in Belgium.”

“There was also the technical problem this morning [Friday], which is never good, but Max will be Max, he will do the best he can and in the end the racing gods will decide.”

We know that Max Verstappen is capable of incredible things on the race track but this would be up there with his best of recoveries. Can Super Max give a reason for the Orange army to cheer on at his home GP?
