“Max’s loss was Checo’s gain”: Christian Horner reveals Red Bull questioned FIA’s decision to revert to the original starting order after the red flag

Red Bull Racing's Team Principal Christian Horner

Christian Horner and Red Bull must have had mixed feelings after the kind of starts Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez had made. While Max Verstappen was quick off the blocks to take the lead from Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez lost one place to Lewis Hamilton going into the first corner. But, Max Verstappen’s efforts amounted to nothing after the race was red flagged after George Russell’s devastating collision with Zhou Guanyu.

Thankfully, all drivers were safe but it took a while to sort the mess out. But, during this while, FIA had a decision to make when it came to figuring out the grid order at the restart. The governing body decided to revert to the original grid order because all of the cars had not crossed the second safety line. This meant Max Verstappen had to do it all over again.

But, at the same time, Sergio Perez got a second crack to make amends but while trying to do so, he incurred damage on his front wing, forcing him into an early pit stop. It went horribly wrong after the restart for Red Bull as Max Verstappen was also stuck behind Carlos Sainz and had to bide his time before making a move on his team mate Carlos Sainz.

Christian Horner recently revealed that Red Bull was not happy with FIA’s decision and did question it. He said, “We questioned it. Max’s loss was Checo’s gain. Not all cars had crossed safety car line [two] from what I understand.”

“The only reference they had was the start line, which is why they went back to that order.”

Talking about whether he was happy with FIA’s decision to revert the grid order, Red Bull’s Team Principal said, “It is something that we perhaps need to look at,” as reported by gpfans.

We’ll never know as to how the race would have panned out had the FIA stuck to the new order. But, it’s important to get rid of the grey area after this confusion has occured.
