McLaren declare hope of Mercedes saving Lando Norris’ Austria PU

McLaren had a tough outing in Austria where their driver Lando Norris was not able to run the MCL36 for the full distance of the First Practice session. The young brit’s power unit gave up during the session and from then onwards the whole Austrian weekend was an uphill battle for the Woking-based team.

With the next Grand Prix quite a few days away, McLaren is hoping for Mercedes to save the PU that misfired as it was Lando’s third of the season. A penalty is looming large over McLaren and they certainly want to avoid it.

Mercedes being the engine supplier of McLaren is doing everything in power to sort the issues on Lando’s third power unit and Team Principal Andreas Seidl while discussing the PU has said, “The power unit that failed on Lando’s side on Friday was a brand new one. It was his third one.”

The analysis is still ongoing on Mercedes HPP side at the moment and hopefully they are in a position to recover that power unit and we will be in a better place again.”

Of course, it is not ideal that we have to go back to the old power units from the pool just because power units lose a bit of power with the mileage.”

But at the same time, it still allowed us to perform as we did [in Austria].”

Formula One is currently in a rare two-week break period but their Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo has had quite a busy last few days. Daniel has recently confirmed that he is committed to the McLaren team and has no intention of leaving till the end of the 2023 Formula One season.

Daniel shared the news via his Instagram and wrote, “I am committed to McLaren until the end of next year and am not walking away from the sport,” the Australian said in a post. “Appreciate it hasn’t always been easy, but who wants easy!

I’m working my ass off with the team to make improvements and get the car right and back to the front where it belongs. I still want this more than ever. See you in Le Castellet.”

After the 33-year-old’s revelation, it is pretty clear that his intention is to stay on the team beyond 2022, and given the rumors that have surrounded the second seat at McLaren this season, it is going to be fascinating to how the second half of the season is going to develop for Daniel and ultimately what Andreas and Zak decide to do with him.
