For the entirety of the 2023 season of Formula One, there have been countless rumors regarding Lewis Hamilton‘s loyalty to Mercedes. The seven-time World Champion had the first winless season of his career last year when he failed to get a single Grand Prix victory with the Mercedes W13. Owing to this huge disappointment, fans believed the 38-year-old Brit would be looking for opportunities elsewhere so that he could still grab a record-breaking eighth F1 title.
One on hand, some outlets even suggested that Ferrari’s Chief John Elkann was eyeing to lure Lewis Hamilton to Maranello with an eye-watering deal. On the other hand, some rumors had it that Lewis was unhappy with the Mercedes squad as they were not agreeing with the salary amount he had quoted. But putting an end to all those roiling rumors, it has now been confirmed that both the Silver Arrow racers–Lewis and George–will be continuing with them till 2025.
While the details of the contract including the amount that both parties agreed upon is not yet out in the media, Lewis Hamilton will stay as an integral part of the Stuttgart outfit. George Russell, who had his debut season with Mercedes in 2022, will also be driving for Toto Wolff’s team for two more years now. But the two Britons have not yet released their official comment since the news about their contract renewal went public.
Both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell feel there are grave errors in Mercedes’ methods
Mercedes might have been able to secure a multi-year contract with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but their mistakes can hardly be brushed under the rug. At the recently held Dutch GP, Lewis Hamilton’s brilliant drive was, according to some fans, sabotaged by Mercedes’ poor strategy. On the other hand, George Russell went on an angry rant over the radio since he was targeting for a podium, but came 17th at Zandvoort. After the race, Lewis said, “As a team we made the wrong decision. Ultimately, it was the team’s call and we paid the price for that.“
On the other hand, Red Bull’s lineup is still a bit uncertain as Max Verstappen has left Sergio Perez miles behind in the World Championship table. At the Dutch GP, there was a point in time when Checo’s laps were a full second slower than his teammate. Given Red Bull’s reputation of demoting racers to AlphaTauri mid-season, it remains to be seen if a fate similar to Gasly’s awaits Perez in the long run.
