‘Did Pierre Gasly like that?’ Mercedes poke fun at Pierre Gasly as Lewis Hamilton overtakes him during Baku GP
Mercedes poked fun at Pierre Gasly as he was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton in Baku.
Pierre Gasly is known for hopping up in unexpected places. Mostly for his Instagram likes. Not only he does like the posts of other drivers and celebrities, but he also does the same for ‘meme pages’. This has by itself become a bit of a meme among Formula 1 fans, and even some teams, as Mercedes have displayed before.
They have done so once again. This time it will perhaps not go down so well with most people. On lap 44, Lewis Hamilton overtook Pierre Gasly during the race, bringing him up to P4, just behind his teammate George Russell. This is where both drivers finished the race. Mercedes’ tweeted:
Despite how Pierre Gasly must have felt after the overtake, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes would have certainly been happy. Hamilton also won Driver of the Day.

The perspectives of the two drivers
During the race, Lewis Hamilton suffered from back pain, and at the end of the race when getting out of the car, he looked very uncomfortable and severely in pain. This must have been due to the bouncing, which he had complained of earlier during the weekend as well, saying that it left him ‘sore’. After the chequered flag, Hamilton sounded noticeably uncomfortable and said:
“Well done guys, great job with the strategy, thank you for continuing to push. Let’s definitely make some changes, okay? Thanks! Let’s keep pushing.”
Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly bagged his first top 5 finish of the season. Last time around in Baku, he had finished on the podium. While this time he was unable to do so, it was still a very impressive drive from the Frenchman, who has looked good all weekend. Speaking after the race, Gasly said that there was not much that he could do to keep Hamilton behind.
“Lewis boxed and then his pace was shocking. I could see him growing every single lap on my mirrors. I tried to defend the best way I could but there was no way to keep him behind.“
Meanwhile, his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda had issues with his rear wing. To stop it from breaking, the team called him into the pits and taped the rear wing. He finished the race in 12th place, having run much higher earlier.
