Mercedes had a blast of a race during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend where they landed their best result yet in the 2022 Formula 1 Championship. While Lewis Hamilton bagged a second position right after race winner Max Verstappen, George Russell followed his teammate and fetched the third spot, thus earning Mercedes their first double podium finish of the season. And it must also be mentioned that it was a weekend of firsts for the Stuttgart-based team as they also nailed their first pole position of 2022 with George Russell‘s career-best Qualifying performance on Saturday.

In a race where tyre strategy was the most crucial, Mercedes got their tactics right and in the end, they took full advantage of Ferrari’s flaws to secure the two podium places for themselves. After the Hungarian Grand Prix was over, the team held a debrief to go over the key points in their race performance at Budapest and how they could have improved certain specificities. During the race review, Mercedes‘ Trackside Engineering Director, Andrew Shovlin, described the overall performance of their team at Hungaroring.

Mercedes’ performance on Friday was below expectations, and thus they recorded their findings to make sure not to repeat their mistakes during the main race. One major thing that they had noted was that the hard tyres were not very effective during the race at Hungaroring, and thus a one-stop strategy was out of question for them.

While going over the race, Andrew Shovlin said, “The only way to do the one stop was to go on a medium and a hard tyre and on both of those stints you’d need quite a lot of management to get to the finish. We tried the hards on friday and it didn’t have good grip.”

Now, it is to be seen how Mercedes perform at the rest of the ten races of this season as they are going into the summer break with a lot of major breakthroughs in the season.
