The second leg of the 2023 F1 season is just a day away and ahead of the Dutch GP, the Brackley-based Mercedes team has shed light on its main target for the ongoing campaign. As per its Technical Director, James Allison, the German team will do everything to finish the campaign in second position in the Constructors Championship.

Last Year, Mercedes finished third in the standings behind the Ferrari F1 team. However, the gap between the outfits was just 39 points, keeping this in view, the Toto Wolff-led team does not want to leave any stone unturned in their pursuit of finishing in second position ahead of the lights of Ferrari, Aston Martin, and, the McLaren F1 team.

While talking about the same, James Allison told racingnews365, “At the start of the year we were fourth quickest, looking at our customers who were beating us, and that was frustrating. Ferrari were beating us too. Little by little we are gradually putting them behind us. Everything is playing a part in it.

From strategy to engineering, reliability, manufacturing and the drivers who are metronomic in their ability to turn half-opportunities into point. Although it falls short of our initial aims, securing P2 nevertheless really matters for all of us. Especially in the second half of the season when the tone will be shifting to the W15.”

While James Allison has made it known that Mercedes’s ultimate aim is to secure second position in the ongoing campaign, it is not going to be like a walk in the park for them considering the teams that they are up against. As things stand, the battle for second place is a three-way fight but could turn into a four-way if McLaren continues its form it found during the closing races of the first leg.

Lewis Hamilton and Co. have so far managed 247 points in the season and have got a strong grip over second place at the moment, but one really can’t count out Aston Martin and the Charles Leclerc-led Ferrari team. The two outfits are currently on 196 and 191 points respectively and if Mercedes has an off day in the upcoming races, the two outfits would be right on their tails.

The Dutch GP being the first race of the second leg, is going to be extremely important for the above-mentioned teams. If any of the teams between Mercedes, Aston Martin, and, Ferrari are able to hit the ground running straight away, it would help them in setting a tone for the remainder of the campaign.
