Kevin Magnussen, the Haas F1 driver, has been given a 5-place grid penalty after taking new power unit components on his VF-22.

The new components on Kevin Magnussen’s car have come because of what happened when reserve driver, Pietro Fittipaldi took Dane’s livery for a spin during yesterday’s FP1 session.

Fittipaldi stopped on track during the session with a technical problem and it was later discovered that the car required a new internal combustion engine that was fitted ahead of the FP2 session.

Moreover, with Magnussen taking his 6th ICE of the season, he has been penalized with a 5-place grid drop as only three are allotted to each team for the current campaign.

As things stand, along with Magnussen, there is only one other driver who has so far taken a grid drop for the Mexican GP, and that driver is Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll.

He has been penalized with a 3-place grid drop for causing a collision with Fernando Alonso during the recently concluded race at the Circuit of the Americas.

During the United States Grand Prix, Kevin Magnussen was able to land his VF-22 in P9 at the end of the race, and was moreover, promoted to P8 after Alonso was given a 30-second time penalty for his crash.

Haas triggered a complaint against the Alpine driver’s crash at the Autin track, and while until yesterday Magnussen was P8 on the official US GP standings, he was again dropped down to P9 after the stewards decided to accept Alpine’s protest.

The Haas team has been handed a body blow ahead of the Mexican GP, as points are crucial for them in their fight in the Constructors Championship.

However, with the US GP chapter now behind them, the American team has got work to do if they want to score points at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit.

Kevin Magnussen has proved to be a better driver than Mick Schumacher this season at Haas and considering he has got a 5-place grid penalty, it is going to be absolutely crucial for the team that the Dane finishes the upcoming qualifying as high as possible.

How much of an impact would Kevin Magnussen be able to make on the back of new ICE components on his VF-22?
