Miami GP 2022: Three winners from the fifth round of 2022 F1 season
George Russell, Max Verstappen, Esteban Ocon
The inaugural Miami GP happened amidst plenty of hype for the star-studded race and saw Max Verstappen as the winner, with Charles Leclerc winning his first podium in the United States after his P2 finish ahead of his teammate Carlos Sainz, who’s still hunting for his first career win.
The race saw a major crash of Lando Norris and plenty of action in all the parts of the grid, be it front of the pack or the back. And while there were plenty of surprises and disappointments, we’ll have a look at the top 3 driver winners of the race, who stood out amongst the pack.

Max Verstappen
The Dutch driver had a blast in Miami GP despite starting from the second row alongside his teammate Sergio Perez. Heading into the Miami GP, Max Verstappen was 27 points behind the drivers’ championship leader and came out shortening his deficit by 8 points. With reliability issues seeming to be left behind in Australia, the reigning champion looked focused as he made a spectacular start to get ahead of Carlos Sainz and followed Charles Leclerc closely and later lead the race comfortably. He now also has a 100% winning rate so far in this season in all the races in which he crosses the finishing line.
Esteban Ocon
One of the least talked about performances that came out of Miami was that of Esteban Ocon. The Alpine driver had a terrible 51g accident in FP3 and failed to set up a qualifying time on Saturday, thus he started at the back of the grid. And despite this setback, with calm and smart driving, he managed to finish P8 and bagged 4 crucial points, as the team is engaging in a P5 battle with Alfa Romeo.
George Russell
It was another P5 for the Briton after starting at P12 in the race. He proved to be lucky with the safety car and managed to overtake both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton once the session resumed. George made the most of the opportunities and later looked comfortable in the car after a botched qualifying. He also remains to be the only driver to record a top 5 finish in every race so far of this season and has managed to fight off Carlos Sainz for P4 in the drivers’ championship.
