“Mick is certainly, in the long term, the better choice,” Marc Surer gives his opinion on the Mick Schumacher versus Nico Hulkenberg battle
The Haas F1 racing team has set fire to an all-new debate in the Formula 1 world as they have taken up Nico Hulkenberg as their new racer for the 2023 season after letting rising talent Mick Schumacher walk off. Now, the American team had hit the jackpot during their last recruitment as they had severed ties with Nikita Mazepin to bring Kevin Magnussen out of his F1 exile and give him a regular racing seat again. Magnussen came back in a fiery form, getting career-best results right from the first 2022 race in Bahrain.
In Hulkenberg’s case, Haas have done quite the same thing as what they had done while hiring Kevin. Haas cut ties with Mick Schumacher, and decided to bring Nico Hulkenberg out of his F1 exile and give him an opportunity to drive alongside Magnussen. It is indeed true that Hulkenberg has massive experience and he has been in way more races than Mick Schumacher. But fans are still not completely convinced if Haas made the right decision to bring a veteran into the team by letting go of a young talent like Mick.
Now, former F1 racer Marc Surer has given his take on the Nico Hulkenberg versus Mick Schumacher debate. Surer believes Hulkenberg will show a brilliant performance since he is hungry for some wins. The German has come close to the F1 podium quite a few times but he is yet to get the first top-3 position in a Grand Prix in his career. But in the long run, Marc Surer thinks Haas would have benefited more from Mick Schumacher as the young German had already shown vast improvements last season at a few races.

Marc Surer says Nico Hulkenberg is a “strong talent”, but so does Mick Schumacher
While settling the debate of who deserves the seat at Haas more–Mick Schumacher or Nico Hulkenberg, Marc Surer said Hulkenberg will give the team better results in the short term. He said to Formel1.de, “He’s a strong talent. In terms of speed, he usually manages it on point.“
But Marc also said Mick Schumacher, who is going to have a year away from the regular racing seats in F1, would have been the better choice in the long term. He said, “With Mick you have someone who has now been paid for practically two years of training in Formula 1 and now you are pushing him away. Mick is certainly in the long term the better choice because we see again and again, like in the qualification in Mexico, that he sometimes lets one out again, that you can really see that he has talent.“
Now, all debate aside, Nico Hulkenberg is all-set to debut as a Haas racer in the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix season-opener for the 2023 Formula 1 campaign. Fans will have their eyes peeled to watch how he performs and prove all his critics wrong as he shows them all that Haas did the right thing by choosing him over Mick Schumacher.
