Mika Hakkinen drops major Fernando Alonso claim, says 2023 is his last chance to win an F1 race

Fernando Alonso, the 2-time F1 World Champion, has been making his trade at the pinnacle of motor racing since 2001. Keeping this into view, Mika Hakkinen, the former 2-time Champion in his own right, has claimed that the ongoing F1 campaign is the Spaniard’s last chance of winning at the top level of motor racing.

Mika Hakkinen ardently feels that Fernando Alonso will start losing his raw speed from next year onward and will find it challenging to go up against the young drivers of the sport. While talking about the same, he said, “Around the time I retired, Fernando Alonso entered Formula 1. From that, its easy to count how long he’s been around.”

He’s doing an incredible job and the patience he has to racing without winning. But one thing I do know is that if he doesn’t win this year, his speed will start declining, it’s a law of physics.” Hakkinen has, on the one hand, applauded Fernando Alonso for his longevity at the pinnacle of motor racing. Still, on the other, he has claimed that he will not be as competitive as he is now from next season onward.

Fernando Alonso jumped ship ahead of the 2023 campaign from Alpine to the Silverstone-based Aston Martin team. The move has been seen as a masterstroke on his part in the F1 paddock, and he has been really good so far in the season. After eight rounds, he has amassed 99 points in the Drivers Championship.

While Fernando Alonso has been in F1 for several years, he has not been able to win a race in the competition since 2013. The AMR23 has proved quite competitive during the ongoing campaign, and based on this, Mika Hakkinen and a few of the other reputed F1 personnel believe that this year might be the Spaniard’s best chance of winning.

So far, in the eight rounds this season, Fernando Alonso has landed his car on the podium an impressive five times. However, he has found it extremely hard to get the better of the mighty Red Bulls. The RB19 has performed exceptionally and is far ahead of all its rivals, including Aston Martin.

However, Formula 1 is an unpredictable sport where strange things happen from time to time, and considering this fact, who knows, Alonso might finally be able to end his victory drought this year. Several races are left on the calendar, and the Spanish maestro just needs one weekend where everything goes in his favor.
