Fernando Alonso’s McLaren stint wasn’t as successful as his time at Aston Martin
Alonso’s tenure at McLaren, following his stint with Ferrari, stands out as one of the most arduous periods in his Formula 1 career. He encountered immense challenges in maintaining competitiveness due to the underwhelming power of the car’s engine and its subpar design.
His memorable declaration, “GP2 engine, GP2,” remains etched in fans’ memories, symbolizing the formidable struggle the Spanish driver grappled with within the team. In 2018, he ultimately opted to retire from the sport. However, the year 2021 marked a significant resurgence as he made a triumphant return with Alpine. The team being instrumental in his championship wins in 2005 and 2006, provided the backdrop for his rejuvenation.
After a two-season spell with the team, he transitioned to Aston Martin this season and has remarkably clinched podium positions five times in just six races. This accomplishment underscores his exceptional driving prowess and reaffirms his triumphant return to form.
At 42 years old, Alonso’s repertoire behind the F1 wheel is nearly unparalleled. A seasoned campaigner in the sport, he has managed to outshine a significant portion of the grid. The 2 two-time world champion has secured an impressive six podium finishes in the initial 12 races of the season.
