“Monaco win shows how hard it is,” Sergio Perez highlights the obstacles for non-Europeans to make a mark in F1

Sergio Perez got emotional after winning the Monaco GP

Sergio Perez has made Mexico and the entire Latin America extremely proud after his win in Monaco. He is the only Mexican to be able to do that and has joined an elite list of non- Europeans including the likes of Senna, Gilles Villeneuve, Jody Scheckter, Carlos Reutemann, Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren and Juan Manuel Fangio. Those have been heavyweights in the sport of F1 and also shows us how big that win was for Sergio Perez.

There are 20 drivers who drive in this illustrious sport but there are only 7 drivers who are non-Europeans. Sergio Perez’s example is perfect to highlight the lack of diversity. He is the only driver from Latin America and that has been the case since 2016. We have heard of F1 being a rich man’s sport for a really long time which has this huge barrier, not allowing outsiders to enter the arena.

Previously, we have heard Lewis Hamilton share his story about how difficult it was for the seven time world champion ever since his karting days. He shared his story about being left out because of the color of his skin and how he had fight through adversity in order to make it big in F1. But, Lewis Hamilton, ever since his entry into the sport has done everything in his capacity to condemn any sort of discrimination.

Now, Sergio Perez has also publicly admitted to the problems faced by an outsider with ambitions in F1. In an interview, after the Monaco win, he said, “I certainly feel like at the moment, I’m the only Mexican – or even Latin American – driver on the grid.”

“So, it just shows how difficult it is for us – not saying that for European drivers, it’s easy – but it just shows how difficult it is for us to make it into the sport and to have successful career in this sport.”

“It is quite hard, but I have to say I’m extremely proud of it,” as reported by planetf1.

Sergio Perez has been a refreshing addition to this Red Bull and started to come into his own after some impressive drives last year around. We all hope that he keeps that Mexican flag hoisting high for a long time in F1.
