Miami Grand Prix 2022

Formula 1 has always been a sort of gilded sport. Since ages ago, F1 has been considered as a closed-off event for only the wealthy and the rich Europeans, and not for the common people. But in recent times, there has been a huge upheaval in the entire way Formula 1 is conducted. With a wide press coverage, F1 is now highly regarded amongst motorsport enthusiasts, no matter what country they live in.

But one problem has always persisted for Formula 1–they have found it incredibly difficult for the popularity of the sport to travel across the pond and reach the United States. And with the release of the widely acclaimed Netflix series called ‘Drive to Survive’, F1 started making headway in the process of garnering a fanfare in America.

Now, the situation for F1 says that many US citizens are actually enjoying watching Formula 1 over other popular American leagues like the NASCAR and IndyCar. With the fame of Formula 1 slowly spreading through the United States, the FIA decided to include some new American circuits in the calendar, to give the US fans a taste of this sport. And thus, Miami was announced to be host to the first-ever Miami Grand Prix this year, and in 2023, we will also get the highly-anticipated Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Last Sunday, the first-ever Miami Grand Prix was held in the Miami International Autodrome Circuit in the Magic City. The grand event saw stars and celebrities from Hollywood fly down to Miami to attend the Grand Prix. And of course, fans were lapping up all the entertainment and the spectacle with their eyes glued to the TV screens.

A Sports Business Journal reporter, on his Twitter wall, recently published viewership numbers for this weekend’s F1 Miami Grand Prix and the NASCAR Series in Darlington.

According to the tweet, the NASCAR event was viewed by 2.614 million viewers in the US while the Miami Grand Prix was viewed by 2.066 million people. Going into the demographics, the number of viewers aged between 18-24 who watched F1 surpassed the number of viewers of the same age group who viewed NASCAR by a wide margin. While 517,000 people between the age of 18 to 24 watched NASCAR on Sunday, a whopping 735,000 people watched F1 Miami Grand Prix on the same day.

These numbers are a testament to the fact that Formula 1 is becoming a huge sensation amongst the young population in the United States, and if this continues, their popularity curve will only go higher up as the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be introduced next year.
