Formula 1 has grown massively in recent years. A large part of this newfound popularity could be credited to the Netflix docuseries, ‘Drive to Survive.’ The first season was released in 2019 which covered the 2018 F1 season. Ever since Drive to Survive has helped push the sport to new audiences with millions of new fans. However, it seems that the show’s sixth season has failed to gain the same traction among viewers.

As per official figures from Netflix, 2.9 million viewers watched the latest season of Drive to Survive in the first three days. This is a 23.2% drop compared to the first three-day viewership last year which stood at 3.85 million.

Moreover, the average viewership hours have taken a massive hit as well. The sixth season of Drive to Survive had a figure of 21.80 million in the first three days. This is a major drop compared to the 25.76 million hours consumed by viewers last year, a fall of 15%.

Certainly, this could be a massive blow to the famous Netflix show. However, it must be noted that fans had blasted Netflix for not focusing on Max Verstappen in its latest season. Even though, the Dutch driver had a record-breaking title campaign in 2023.

What caused the drop in viewership of Drive to Survive?

Drive to Survive brings some interesting behind-the-scenes footage for fans. The 2024 iteration of the show even highlighted George Russell‘s comments over a potential Lewis Hamilton Mercedes exit. However, it seems that the Netflix show is failing to attract more viewers.

The F1 docuseries has been infamous for its content including the addition of ex-NASCAR star Danica Patrick. Die-hard fans of the sport have dismissed Drive to Survive due to the nature of the show. Alex Albon even mocked the showmakers in its new season. Moreover, the increased length and similar storyline of season six compared to the previous season further dissuaded viewers.

Certainly, Drive to Survive’s new season could gain back its viewership numbers in the coming days. However, the recent fall might signal an increasing disinterest from the audience which could force the show makers to bring in some changes for the future.
