Nikita Mazepin provides important update on ongoing Haas lawsuit
Nikita Mazepin
Nikita Mazepin was contracted to drive for Haas in 2022, but back in March, this contract was terminated along with Haas’ Uralkali sponsorship. Mazepin’s father, Dmitry, has a majority stake in URALCHEM, URALKALI’s parent organization. In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Nikita and his father were sanctioned by the European Union and the United Kingdom for their ‘closeness’ to Vladimir Putin.
Mazepin racing again in Formula 1 is an extremely unlikely prospect. The driver was already controversial and unpopular amongst a large section of Formula 1 fans, and the sanctions, coupled with Mazepin’s performances and the current driver situations on the grid, it doesn’t particularly look like Mazepin will be driving in Formula 1 again.
It was later revealed that Nikita Mazepin is suing Haas for unpaid wages and also severance pay in a Swiss court, as that was where the contract had been signed between the team and Mazepin. Recently, in an interview with Match.TV, Mazepin revealed some details about the lawsuit.
Nikita Mazepin is hopeful of racing in Formula 1 again in the future
As reported by PlanetF1, in his interview with Match.TV, Mazepin said: “My personal lawsuits are in full swing. We have already selected the jurisdiction – the place where the contract was signed, in Switzerland.”
When asked about his view on being called a ‘former F1 driver’, Mazepin answered in clear terms: “Not offended. I believe we must call things by their proper name.”
He added: “There is a reason why there are only 20 places and 10 teams in Formula 1. I don’t have a valid contract. When I crossed the line in 2022, I had one. And it’s generally an amazing situation in the history of the series when you have a contract until the new year and then you lose it.”
Despite his current situation, Mazepin is optimistic about potentially racing in Formula 1 again: “But I’m all for honesty, I’m used to calling things by their proper name. I focus on the fact there are great opportunities to get a contract in Formula 1 in the future. I’m 23 years old, if you look at my results in Formula 3 and Formula 2, with time and experience I make a much bigger jump than my rivals. And based on that experience, I look forward to tomorrow with confidence.”
Mazepin said that he still follows the sport and that he watched the Austrian Grand Prix, and all the races he could watch on the broadcasts. He added that he does more ‘analyzing’ now and that watching from the outside is also an ‘experience’.
