“No issue in bringing him back,” Otmar Szafnauer open to a possible return for Daniel Ricciardo to Alpine
Daniel Ricciardo
It’s no secret that Daniel Ricciardo has not been in the best of form for McLaren this year around, which has in turn increased the burden on Lando Norris to bring home the points week in and week out. This run of bad form has put McLaren in a tough situation in their fight with Alpine. The Woking based team currently has 95 points in the championship 4 less than their competitors.
The Australian has a contract until 2023 with McLaren but his concerning form this year has raised questions around his future with the team. But, Daniel Ricciardo recently came out to say that he will see out the contract with McLaren and then decide about his future. But, Sebastian Vettel’s retirement from the sport has brought a twist to the tale as far as driver line-up goes for certain teams.
Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement at the end of the year before the Hungarian GP, which meant that Aston Martin was on the look out for another driver. Fernando Alonso was one of their prime targets and fortunately for them, they were able to convince him to join the team. Oscar Piastri looked like the obvious choice but it looks like the deal is not sealed.
Otmar Szafnauer believes Daniel Ricciardo can come back to Alpine
Now, Alpine is on the look out for a driver to drive alongside Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo is one of the rumored names. Talking on the current situation, Otmar said, “I mean, if you look at Fernando, for example, he comes and goes, and I think that happens to other drivers too.”
“And I don’t think that’s an issue at all. I think what we need to focus on is, like I say, the plans that we have for the next 89-88 races.”
“We’ve got to make sure that we complement that plan with the best driver that we can, and there are some options out there for us. And we put the best driver in next to Esteban [Ocon], so that we can move forward towards what we’ve been planning.”
Daniel Ricciardo is one of the most talented drivers in F1 but Alpine would want to have a driver who is performing well. The situation is continuously becoming more and more complex. We’ll have to see how this situation pans out.
