‘Not an Italian GP special tee’: F1 Twitter flares up after Mercedes poke fun at Ferrari’s special Monza jersey

Ferrari have unveiled a ‘special’ jersey for the Italian Grand Prix this weekend. And it’s taken the fans aback, as it’s a rather strange one. Instead of the classic red, the Italians have opted for a bright yellow colour scheme, which is also set to be the theme for the one-off livery they will run at the track.

The ‘mustard’ yellow colour scheme is a stark contrast to the colour red associated with the team. It’ll be interesting to find out if it’s just a creative choice or if there is a deeper meaning behind it. The yellow is certainly an interesting choice and is slightly reminiscent of a Borussia Dortmund or Renault jersey.

The reception has been rather mixed, however. At the very least, it spawned some funny reactions and memes from people on social media, and even Mercedes have joined in on the action by poking fun at the design.

Followingthe Scuderia’s jersey preview and announcement, Mercedes also took to social media to post their own shirts. The tweet contained a link to their store, with the caption saying: “Not an #ItalianGP special tee. Just promoting anyway.”

There were many amusing reactions from F1 Twitter to the respective posts, both towards Mercedes and Ferrari. Some of the best include:

The jersey also drew various comparisons to the ‘Minions’ from the ‘Despicable Me’ movie franchise, with one of the memes depicting Mattia Binotto as ‘Gru’, and Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz as the Minions.

Translation: “Did you say yellow livery?”

As earlier mentioned, the jersey is more similar to a Renault jersey than a Ferrari one. F1 Twitter certainly seems to think the same way.

Charles Leclerc had once worn a banana outfit on one of his Twitch streams. Perhaps the team has taken some inspiration from the iconic costume.

Monza is always a special weekend for the Tifosi, and recently, the mood has been rather low. While the championship is out of reach, a great weekend here will do much to lift the supporters’ spirits. However, Red Bull and Max Verstappen have looked unstoppable recently, and the track may suit the car. Regardless, Monza is always an exciting weekend and everyone, Ferrari fan or not, is looking forward to it.
