“Not realistic…but that’s the way I approach the seasons”: Charles Leclerc makes honest admission about title hopes
Charles Leclerc
The Formula 1 2022 season has already come to the month-long summer break and there are only ten races left in the roster. As of now, Charles Leclerc‘s hopes of winning the World Championship title this year seem rather bleak as reigning Champion Max Verstappen has shown exemplary performance and has managed to build a huge gap of 80 points between him and Leclerc. As Ferrari’s strategies have failed the Monegasque on two separate occasions in the last two races at France and Hungary, it has become all the more difficult for Leclerc to bridge the widening point-gap.
In a recent interview, Charles Leclerc was asked about whether they always had it in their heads at the Ferrari garage that this year, they would be targeting for the Championship victory. Even though the current situation does not look too promising for the Scuderia driver, he has been most of the F1 pundits’ biggest bet for winning the coveted title in 2022 because of the initial performance put up by Ferrari with their fast car and brilliant driver line-up.
Charles Leclerc did admit that it had been his target right from the beginning that he wanted to win the Championship title, and he had worked for it through all the 12 races that have happened till now.
Charles Leclerc talks about setting a clear target for every Formula 1 season
In the last two years in F1, Scuderia Ferrari had performed much below the expectations of the devoted Tifosi because they could not crack the code to the perfect car, and they also had troubles with their team tactics. But this time, after the FIA announced several rule changes, Ferrari came out with the F1-75–the racecar that everybody claimed to be one of the best on the grid, and they also improved their tactics. Thus, it was clear that the team was back to fight for their rightful place at the top of the Championship table.
Unfortunately for Ferrari, their strategies started showing faults as did their cars after the initial few races of the season. Charles Leclerc had three retirements while Carlos Sainz also suffered many DNFs. This led to them losing out on much-needed points while Red Bull caught up with them and then surpassed them. While speaking on the topic of whether they had a clear target to win the Championship right from the beginning, Charles Leclerc still admitted that despite recent results, Ferrari’s aim had always been to win the Championship in 2022.
The Monegasque driver said, “I mean yes of course whenever you start a season, you pick targets.” Thus, it is clear that Ferrari always had it in their minds to give it a shot at winning the Championship, and even though it now looks like Red Bull has better chances of winning the title this year, the Scuderia will surely be back with a better package in 2023 and can get to the top of the charts by surpassing all its rivals.
Leclerc also said, “On my side, I’ve also got my personal targets. I can tell you, in all the F1 seasons that I have done, most of the time they were not really realistic. But that‘s the way I approach the seasons.”
