Nyck de Vries finally signs with AlphaTauri as Pierre Gasly’s Alpine move seems imminent – Reports
Nyck de Vries (L) Pierre Gasly (R)
Nyck de Vries, Formula E and Formula 2 champion had been unable to find a seat in Formula 1, and instead had to suffice for a reserve driver role at Mercedes. But he got his chance in Monza, and safe to say, he delivered.
The Dutchman first participated with Aston Martin in FP1 and was then thrown into the Williams car after Alex Albon’s appendicitis diagnosis. He finished P9 in the race, and his result meant that he currently has more points than Nicholas Latifi does in the entirety of the championship. And de Vries only participated in one race.
de Vries had been linked to a Williams seat for a long time, but after Colton Herta’s move to AlphaTauri fell through (due to him not getting the required super license exemption), the team turned their attention to the Monza debutant. Now, the move seems to have materialized, and we might have two Dutchmen on the grid next year, both driving for Red Bull family teams.
Nyck de Vries’ AlphaTauri move should free up Pierre Gasly to go to Alpine
The primary purpose of the move from AlphaTauri is to replace Pierre Gasly. There have long been rumours of Gasly going to Alpine, even if he had extended his contract some time ago. Despite that, the de Vries move also has another dimension: It frees the Frenchman, and now he can leave AlphaTauri.
This is the case, according to the French television channel CANAL+. Obviously, the team wouldn’t have let Gasly go if the terms were not proper, and there will likely be some compensation. It simply means that Gasly to Alpine might also be a done deal, as de Vries wouldn’t have signed with the team otherwise.
While an all-French lineup at Alpine (Renault) is a very exciting prospect for the fans, Gasly and Esteban Ocon are known not to be on the best of terms. Ocon had even suggested his preferred replacement, opting for Mick Schumacher, but that doesn’t look likely. Schumacher’s own future is in danger as well, as his seat isn’t confirmed for next year, with Guenther Steiner interested in Daniel Ricciardo.
Nyck de Vries was also considered to be a frontrunner for the seat at Williams, but now it’s likely they will shift their attention to Logan Sargeant. However, that is its own issue. Sargeant will need to finish fifth or higher in the F2 championship to possess the required super license points for a Formula 1 seat. While he currently sits 3rd, the gap to fifth is only 9 points. F1’s ‘silly season’ is heating up.
