Teams are obligated to give at least two FP1 sessions to ‘young drivers’. Liam Lawson, Juri Vips, and Nyck de Vries have already availed themselves of this opportunity, and in fact, De Vries has already done it twice. Robert Kubica has done it thrice. With Aston Martin this weekend at the Italian GP, de Vries will get his third run in a free practice session this season.

De Vries is the reserve driver for Mercedes, and it appears that Mercedes’ relationship with Williams and Aston Martin (being their engine supplier) gives him more opportunities than are normally available. In Aston Martin’s blog post, De Vries said: “I am really looking forward to driving for AMF1, particularly at such a legendary circuit as Monza.”

The Dutchman further commented: “It will be my third FP1 session of the season, and in the third different Formula One chassis and these opportunities have given me a fantastic insight into how Formula One cars and teams function and operate. I hope I can bring a fresh perspective to the AMF1 team and can undertake a run-programme that proves beneficial to us both.”

Mike Krack on Nyck de Vries: ‘Delighted to welcome Nyck to our team’

As mentioned in the blog post, Nyck de Vries has already done a substantial amount of simulator work in preparation for his FP1 run. The Dutchman will drive alongside Lance Stroll, replacing Sebastian Vettel. This is certainly valuable running time for the Formula E champion.

Aston Martin’s team principal, Mike Krack said: “We are delighted to welcome Nyck to our team, and we look forward to working with him at Monza. I have watched Nyck’s career with great interest – he drove brilliantly to win the Formula 2 title in 2019 and underlined his class by winning the Formula E World Championship in 2020/2021, so we are looking forward to gaining his perspectives and insights about our car.”

Krack commented that de Vries deserves a chance in Formula 1: “His achievements show that he clearly deserves a shot at Formula One – and, hopefully, this opportunity to get behind the wheel of the AMR22 will allow him to showcase his abilities to the wider world.”

De Vries is 27 years old, but he has not yet been able to make his race debut in Formula 1. Despite that, he does have impressive achievements: He is a F2, and a Formula E champion. But opportunities in Formula 1 have been hard to come by for the Dutchman, hopefully that will change in the future.
