The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is round the corner, and this track is one of the most historical tracks for the sport, and is also referred to as F1’s home Grand Prix. This is because on the 13th of May, 1950, the first ever F1 race was held on this track, at Silverstone. Since then, the track has undergone multiple changes, modifying the layout of the track way different from what it was 72 years back, and since then, the cars have also developed to become a miracle in the motorsport industry.

The track now has become a real challenge for the racers, it has both high speed corners like Copse, that are taken on the 7th and 8th gears, and also the slowest of chicanes, being a real duty for the drivers. However, one thing that the track is an extreme challenge are the tyres, and this year with the new 18 inch tyres from Pirelli, it would be an exciting scene to watch them run out of life on the circuit. Pirelli would be giving the hardest compound tyres for Silverstone, and this is one of the three tracks that require this kind of tyre configuration.

Silverstone’s unpredictable weather could play a part

Lewis Hamilton after winning the 2020 race at Silverstone with a punctured tyre

Although the race last year was won with 2 pit stops, it could be way different this year with the new tyres, also the weather at the GP could play a major part with the same. As we saw in 2020, Lewis Hamilton suffered a puncture mid-lap during his final lap, leading the Grand Prix. Although he still managed to win, it shows just how unpredictable the track is for the tyres. “The tyres are designed to provide less overheating, more stability, and increased driveability within a wider working window. All these aspects will be tested this weekend, on one of the most challenging tracks for tyres of the year,” Pirelli wrote, as GPblog quoted.
