While acknowledging that Red Bull is still “far ahead” on the racecourse, Charles Leclerc has stated that Ferrari’s most recent car improvements are a “step in the right direction.” Leclerc ended Max Verstappen’s streak of 249 straight laps since taking the lead from Sergio Perez at the Miami Grand Prix at the Austrian Grand Prix. In order to catch up to Red Bull and make the SF-23 more predictable for drivers, Ferrari made extensive changes to its floor and front wing for the Austrian race.
Leclerc was pleased with how the car felt overall, although he acknowledges that they are still far behind Verstappen’s pace, who had a significant enough lead at the finish line to pit and make an effort to the fastest lap. “The feeling has been better overall – which is great – now we need to keep pushing as Red Bull’s are still quite far ahead,” he told media. “We want to be challenging in the Red Bull for the win, but we’ve done a step in the right direction for sure.”
Ferrari supporters now have fresh optimism for their team’s success in the championship this season after Charles Leclerc’s excellent second-place showing in the Austrian Grand Prix. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is considerably different from the circuits in Canada and Austria, so it’s important to note that Ferrari’s ultimate test will undoubtedly be at Silverstone to provide them with a complete picture of their development. Given Carlos Sainz’s resounding win at the British GP last time the Ferrari crew were there for the 2022 season, it is safe to say that the Scuderia are hopeful for a decent result in the least.
Fred Vasseur talked about Ferrari’s chances of a good result at Silverstone GP
Frédéric Vasseur said that the past two races have clearly demonstrated that the team have made progress with the SF-23 and the drivers have been able to drive attacking races, thanks to improved tyre management and a more consistent long run pace of the car. He also admitted “However, we are not yet in a position to challenge the current championship leaders, which is why we continue to work hard. Ferrari has very strong links to this track, which is one of the historic venues on the Formula 1 calendar.”
Vasseur said that last year Carlos secured his first ever Formula 1 win in Silverstone and Charles has come close on a few occasions himself to win here in Silverstone, listing Silverstone as one of his favourite permanent circuits for the team. Vasseur also insisted that both drivers, along with the whole team, will be doing their utmost to take the fight to their opponent opponents who naturally will be keen to shine at home.
