Oscar Piastri has been one of the main topics of discussion during the summer break where many pundits have shared their views regarding the Australian’s decision to leave Alpine in favor of McLaren.
Ex-Formula One Driver Ralf Schumacher has also jumped on the Oscar Piastri bandwagon and discussed what he thinks about the drama surrounding the Australian.
Oscar Piastri via his social media handles announced that he has not signed a contract with Alpine after the French team made it public that they have promoted him to an F1 seat for 2023.
Since then the saga has escalated between the parties and to add more spice, it is believed that Oscar has a plan in place with McLaren to drive for them in 2023 in place of fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo.
Moreover, the way Alpine has reacted to the situation it is becoming likely that the issue is going to end up in court and the team has been extremely critical of the actions of its reserve driver. Otmar Szafnauer has blatantly indicated that what Piastri did was completely unethical.
Ralf Schumacher sympathizes with the young Oscar Piastri
While the F1 paddock has got mixed reactions around Oscar Piastri’s antics, Ralf Schumacher has defended the former F2 and F3 Champion by saying, “I am sorry. I like Otmar, but he himself is disappointed with his own performance, that he did not see Alonso’s departure coming and that he has no plan B.”
“That’s the shameful thing about the whole thing. That’s why he has to blame himself. Oscar didn’t do anything wrong. “
Moreover, Schumacher believes Alpine should have been proactive in sorting out Fernando Alonso’s contract so that Oscar Piastri would have known sooner where his future lies. He believes Piastri waited long enough and added, “I would have done the same if I had had an offer. And McLaren is definitely a top team.”
Schumacher has sympathized with the Australian and indicated that he would have done he same thing had he been in his shoes. He further believes McLaren is a team that is on the right path in F1 and sees no issues with Piastri looking to part ways with the Alpine F1 team.
F1 is returning on the 26th of August and the way things have gone out of proportion in recent weeks, it is going to be fascinating to see how long the saga is going to continue and where Piastri is going to ultimately end up.
