Oscar Piastri left the Alpine Academy after being their reserve driver in 2022, to join McLaren for the 2023 season. After initial setbacks in terms of car performance, upgrades in Austria saw Piastri prove his potential with two podium finishes and consistent points finishes.

Piastri has ambitious plans for his 2024 campaign, as he progresses to catch up with his teammate Lando Norris. The 22-year-old said that he aims to get closer to Norris and give him a good fight to help further his racing career, especially when McLaren is unconcerned about a rivalry between the two.

I’m obviously able to get quite close to Lando in most sessions, but I want to take that next step and really be able to challenge him.
Piastri said, as reported by formu1a.uno

Piastri was named Rookie of the Year in 2023, unsurprisingly. The Australian finished ninth in the championship, three places behind Lando Norris who was engaged in the battle for fourth place until the Abu Dhabi GP.

Mika Hakkinen is a double world champion, having won both his titles with the McLaren team in 1998 and 1999. The ‘Flying Finn’ appreciated Piastri’s cool-headed demeanor and focus while driving, commending his feedback to the team to help progress.

I know he’s a cool-headed guy. He kept his head down and stayed focused. Having heard him chat with the engineers, I know he gives good feedback and information.

Piastri will be hoping to compete higher up the order in the upcoming 2024 season, after being unable to do so for the whole 2023 campaign. 2024 will also see Norris and Piastri work better in cohesion with one season of racing as teammates under their belt.
