The Indian Premiere League is one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world. This cricketing tournament has widespread viewership across India with hundreds of millions tuning in every year. As the IPL continues to gain fanfare across the globe, McLaren F1 driver Oscar Piastri revealed that he was interested in watching the league this season.

The Tata IPL is in its seventeenth season in 2024 with ten teams competing for the title. Oscar Piastri wrote on X that he was going to follow the league this year. The Australian driver asked his followers for suggestions about which team he should support during his first season as a spectator.

Getting into the IPL this year. Any suggestions who I should support?

Piastri would certainly like his fellow countryman do well in the IPL this season. 2023 Men’s World Cup winning captain Pat Cummins and ace bowler Mitchell Starc were the two highest paid players in the 2024 Tata IPL auction. As such, Oscar Piastri might be inclined to support the likes of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) this year.

Ex-F1 driver Karun Chandhok and Formula E’s Jehan Daruvala share their recommendations to Oscar Piastri

Karun Chandhok is one of two Indians to ever compete in a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The driver-turned-presenter replied to Oscar Piastri’s post. Chandhok suggested that the Australian driver should support Chennai Super Kings (CSK) this year, undoubtedly because of Indian legend MS Dhoni. Previously, Piastri had taken a dig at Karun Chandhok after Australia defeated India in the 2023 Men’s World Cup final.

On the other hand, Formula E’s Jehan Daruvala urged Oscar Piastri to cheer for Mumbai Indians (MI). Australia’s Tim David pulled off an impressive performance for Mumbai in its game against the Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday. Albeit SRH emerged victorious. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are two of the most successful franchises in the IPL. Both teams have won five IPL titles each.

Certainly, Indian F1 fans would love to see Oscar Piastri become a fan of the IPL. The Australian driver has been fond of cricket for many years. However, the McLaren driver never truly followed the biggest cricket T20 league before. As such, it remains to be seen which team Piastri decides to support in the seventeenth season of the IPL.
