Otmar Szafnauer recently got sacked by the Alpine Formula 1 team, and since then, several rumors have been making the round about his potential return to the sport. While the Szafnauer rumors train has been in full swing, it has come out that Andretti-Cadillac would look to appoint him as Team Principal if they make it into F1 in the upcoming years.
Otmar Szafnauer has been associated with F1 since 1998 and has, over the years, held important roles at several teams. His most notable stints came at Racing Point, Aston Martin, and most recently, Alpine, where he made his trade as their Team Principal. While the Romanian-American is currently on gardening leave, the rumors of his potential arrival at Andretti have picked immense pace.
Andretti has been pushing to get on the F1 grid for quite some time now, and to make a solid case, they have joined hands with automobile giant, Cadillac, creating the potential F1 team’s name to Andretti-Cadillac. The two parties are extremely serious about finding a spot on the Formula 1 grid.
The hierarchy of the pinnacle of motor racing is currently dwelling on the various proposals they have received in recent months, and it is believed that the Andretti-Cadillac F1 saga will stretch for some time. The ball is in the court of F1 to make a move, and from then on, things would further develop.
Otmar Szafnauer did not last long at Alpine F1
While Andretti-Cadillac is desperately trying to find a spot on the grid, their potential target has had a rough time in F1 in recent years. Otmar Szafnauer was Aston Martin’s Team Principal until 2021 and was sacked ahead of next year’s campaign. In February 2022, he then joined Alpine with the hope of showing what he could do.
2022 proved to be a successful year for the team as under the guidance of Szafnauer, the Enstone-based team was able to finish fourth in the Constructors Championship ahead of McLaren. However, things did not go as planned during the ongoing campaign, and he was sacked brutally during the Belgian GP.
Considering everything discussed above, Andretti-Cadillac’s potential move to bring Otmar Szafnauer on board in case they make it into F1, could drastically backfire. If the American team makes it into F1 in the coming years, it would be extremely fascinating to see how they would perform.
