Pierre Gasly joined Alpine in 2023, leaving AlphaTauri and the Red Bull family. Gasly had been with Toro Rosso, later named AlphaTauri, for four and a half years. In 2019, Gasly was promoted to drive for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. But just halfway into the season, Gasly was demoted back to Toro Rosso in favor of Alexander Albon.

Gasly said on the Beyond the Grid podcast that he had never discussed his replacement by Alex Albon with Red Bull and wanted a chance to talk about it. After the Frenchman joined AlphaTauri again, he knew he would not be considered much for another chance for Red Bull. Gasly said Red Bull has smart decisions about what drivers go where, but demoting him was an unfair move by the team.

No, I hope one day we get the chance to. But I know, deep inside, they’re smart people…It’s the way that it was, it wasn’t really fair. But anyway, that’s the sport and I’ve learned as well that this sport is not always fair.

A major factor in Gasly’s replacement by Red Bull was his lack of performance compared to Max Verstappen, though a teammate has never beaten Verstappen except for one. The man to do it, Daniel Ricciardo, has technically taken Gasly’s old place in the Scuderia AlphaTauri and is looking for a potential spot with Red Bull again. He got back to the team replacing Nyck de Vries.

Pierre Gasly opens up about relationship with teammate Esteban Ocon

Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon have never had the smoothest of relationships, though the two grew up karting together, being acquaintances since the age of six. The two French compatriots progressed in their respective racing careers together. Eventually, both of them reached the pinnacle of motorsport.

When the two became teammates in 2023, Gasly had to acknowledge that it wouldn’t be easy to partner with Ocon. Gasly said the two have differing personalities, which could have led to a disparity, but that was avoided as each driver understood their responsibilities.

I knew that it would not be easy, but at the same time I knew that we had grown up a lot…We have different personalities; we’re just two different types of people, but ultimately I think we’ve been working really well. I think we understood the responsibility.”

Gasly and Ocon have achieved a podium this year with Alpine and have taken the team to sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship. As they gear up for 2024, both Gasly and Ocon will be cultivating a healthy rivalry with a year of experience as teammates under their belts.
