The Austrian GP weekend was riddled with drama surrounding track limits. Several drivers had their lap times deleted during Qualifying and the Sprint shootout with 10 drivers being penalised for track limit violations after the race. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly mentioned that even his grandmother could not understand the way the sessions were being conducted in Spielberg.
Gasly was critical that 43 lap times were deleted during Qualifying at the Red Bull Ring. The 27-year-old stated that his grandmother was confused when she saw Lewis Hamilton drop from the top of the standings to P18 after violating track limits. He said, “I had my grandma [watching] in front of the TV she didn’t understand a thing. She was like, ‘What the hell is actually going on? Lewis [Hamilton] is once P1 then two seconds later he’s P18.’”
The French driver was not happy over the situation regarding track limits at the Circuit. Gasly received a ten-second time penalty for the same which saw him drop down from P9 to P10. The Alpine driver believed that these rules should be relaxed to prevent a similar situation in the future.

Pierre Gasly was not the only driver vocal about his frustration over track limits at the Red Bull Ring. Gasly’s teammate Esteban Ocon was perhaps the biggest victim of exceeding track limits in the Austrian GP. Ocon received four-time penalties for violating the rules that accumulated to 30 seconds on track. Although the two Alpine drivers were far from being the only offenders.
Red Bull has stated that they will hold discussions with F1 and the FIA to find a solution. The Red Bull Ring signed a massive contract with the sport to stay on the calendar till at least 2030. Subsequently, it is necessary that changes are made either on track or in the way track limits are scrutinized at this circuit to prevent such a fiasco in the future.
Thus, Pierre Gasly mentioned how his grandmother simply could not understand the way drivers were being penalized in Austria over track limits. This in turn shows that the time penalties and lap time deletions made it confusing for fans watching the race back at home. As such, it will be crucial for Formula 1 to solve this problem to prevent any such issues on other tracks as well.
