‘Pretends to be shocked’: No surprises for F1 Twitter as Pierre Gasly’s move to Alpine is FINALLY announced
Pierre Gasly
After months of build-up, it has finally happened. Pierre Gasly will be an Alpine driver in 2023, signed on a multi-year contract. He will partner with Esteban Ocon, which makes the roster all-French. This is certainly an exciting prospect, regardless of their own rocky personal relationship.
It had become rather apparent that the move was done, and even football reporter Fabrizio Romano chipped in, saying his catchphrase ‘Here we go!’ in relation to the deal. Ocon and Gasly’s relationship aside, it is rather obvious that this was the team’s best option, and they have taken it. Of course, he had a contract with AlphaTauri for 2023, but Red Bull have decided to let him go early.
This also means that they have a replacement, who has now been confirmed to be Nyck de Vries. It’s been quite a few weeks for the Dutchman. Colton Herta was the preferred choice at AlphaTauri, but he could not get a super license exemption. After being in contention for a Williams seat, de Vries will instead move to the Italians.
Pierre Gasly: “Driving for a team that has French roots is something very special”
As per Formula 1’s official website, Pierre Gasly was definitely very pleased to sign for Alpine. The Frenchman had been rather stuck at AlphaTauri, as there were no better options. But the domino effect from Sebastian Vettel’s retirement, and then Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin has finally led to this.
Gasly said: “I am delighted to join the Alpine family and begin this new chapter in my Formula 1 career. Driving for a team that has French roots is something very special. I know the strengths of Alpine having raced against them over the past couple of years and, clearly, their progress and ambition is very impressive.”
Fans have also had a variety of reactions to the news. Alpine fans are understandably delighted, but fans of AlphaTauri (or people that are very fond of the friendship between Yuki Tsunoda and Gasly) are considerably less happy with the news.
The move had become a bit of an open secret, and if anything, the primary feeling along fans would not have been of suspense, but rather anticipation.
Esteban Ocon, his new teammate, also took to social media to welcome Pierre Gasly to the team. The two used to be good friends in the past, but they are not exactly now that. Gasly said that it was due to him beating Ocon in karting.
The current AlphaTauri driver is sure to have a spring in his step this weekend. The move also means that his 9-year association with Red Bull is at an end. He will surely be missed.
