Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher are statistically two of the greatest drivers in Formula 1. Both drivers hold the joint record for the most F1 championships with seven each. Subsequently, many debated which driver would’ve had the edge over the other if they raced during their primes. Mercedes’ James Allision claimed that Schumacher was quicker than Hamilton over single-lap pace. However, F1 pundit Peter Windsor has refuted this claim.
The 71-year-old acknowledged that race engineers are entitled to have an opinion over such comparisons. Although Peter insisted that James Allison made this bold claim while only accounting for information available to him and not external factors. As for the F1 journalist, he reckoned that the two drivers are quite evenly matched when it comes to their peaks in the sport.
Peter stated, “But to me there is absolutely no way in the world Michael Schumacher, at his peak, was quicker over one lap than Lewis Hamilton at his peak over one lap, no way.” Windsor made his stance clear on the comments by the Technical Director at Mercedes, as the Australian could simply not comprehend this claim. Subsequently, the 71-year-old made it clear that he disagreed with Allison.

Peter Windsor is not convinced by Allison’s opinion

The F1 pundit explained how he has seen engineers form an opinion about their drivers in the past. Peter Windsor believed that an opinion is formed as the driver interacts with the team during debrief sessions and their behavior on dinners or just by mere lap time. The 71-year-old was convinced that James might have formed his own view similarly rather than by looking at how the cars are driven on the track.
Although the Australian admitted that he is certain Allison did not claim out of the blue. The Mercedes Technical Director is widely respected in the paddock. Yet, Windsor was clear that a prime Lewis Hamilton would not be defeated by a prime Michael Schumacher. Both drivers achieved considerable success in the sport, with Hamilton still hungry for more.
Thus, Peter Windsor has rubbished the claims made by James Allison over a Schumacher-Hamilton duel. The 71-year-old reckons that engineers usually do not account for the entirety of information before making such judgments that in turn, hampers their opinions. Although, fans will just have to stay content with the words of both Peter and James on this issue.
