‘Put him in the Alpine’: Fans react after realizing Kevin Magnussen holds fastest lap record in Singapore

Kevin Magnussen

Kevin Magnussen made a surprising return to the Formula 1 grid this season after Nikita Mazepin was sacked following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And at least at the start, he delivered better than many had been expecting. In the first race, he finished fifth and scored points in three of the first four races.

Since the Miami Grand Prix however, the results seem to have rather fallen away for Haas and Magnussen, even if there were two more occasions in which the team scored (double) points. The package and the reliability have often not delivered as they had earlier, and Haas are now in a battle for 7th place with AlphaTauri.

Regardless of that, it has been a good return for the Danish driver. With the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, an impressive record he holds has come to light: Magnussen is the holder of the fastest lap record in Singapore, and it is unlikely to be broken any time soon, as this generation of cars is only at the beginning of the development cycle. Fans on Reddit praised the Dane, and also made some jests.

Kevin Magnussen certainly had everything going for him when he took the fastest lap, but the weekend, on the whole, had been rather disappointing, and Magnussen would eventually finish 18th, and his teammate, Romain Grosjean finished in P15. But on lap 50, this did not matter, and with clean air and Hypersoft tyres, Magnussen snatched the fastest lap point (and record) with a 1:41.905.

As mentioned before, the cars this year are slower than the ones that came before, and the record is safe for some time. One fan realized this as well, saying: “Safe to say it won’t broken for a while.” to which another replied jokingly: “Don’t worry. Ferrari is gonna pit Leclerc in the last lap to try to snatch it. Yes, he will lose 4 positions in the race but hey what’s that in comparison with the track record.”

One fan also pointed out that Kevin Magnussen, interestingly, also took the fastest lap point next year in Singapore: “Kevin only has 2 fastest laps in his career, and both are at Singapore those 2 years!” another praised him: “F**king Viking.” One fan called for him to go to Alpine: “Man. Put Kevin in the Alpine. He’s a fun driver to watch when he can actually compete.”

Alpine do have a vacant seat, but Magnussen is not particularly considered to be a contender for that, even though his teammate, Mick Schumacher has been considered, in addition to Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo. Magnussen is likely to stay at Haas a while, but he probably will not be setting another fastest lap this season.
