The Mercedes Formula 1 team has been on an upward trajectory in recent races, and its Technical Director, James Allison, has made it known that his team can topple Red Bull off its current pedestal. He feels the mighty Red Bull team has no exclusive right to be at the front and has achieved it by doing a brilliant job.

The Mercedes F1 team has struggled a bit since the dawn of the new sports regulations and is trying its best to close the wide gap that Red Bull has put between itself and the rest of the F1 teams. 2022 was an incredibly tough year for Lewis Hamilton and Co. but they have started showing improvements during the ongoing campaign.

James Allison, being at the center of everything that goes on a Mercedes, knows how much his team has improved. While sharing his thoughts ahead of the upcoming Austrian GP, he said, “We’re all going to feel a bit miffed about [not being able to challenge Red Bull]. Even though that sort of unhappiness we see every time they win is offset hugely by the fact that it is thrilling in its own way to be fighting back, to be improving our car week-on-week.”

They don’t have a God-given right to be in the lead, they’re there by merit, having worked really well. If we can do as good or better job, we’ll be there and that is actually a lot of fun. It’s a very, very exhilarating thought once you frame it correctly in your head, and something that we’re all tucked into trying to make a reality,” he added.

While James Allison has oozed a lot of positivity around the Mercedes F1 team, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have done most of their talking behind the wheel of the W14. The duo has performed well in the last couple of races, and things are looking good for the team heading into the Austrian GP.

On the back of the improvements that have been made on the W14, the Mercedes drivers have been able to put in strong performances, and the team is currently found itself in an intense battle for P2 in the Constructors Championship. Their straight-up competition this year is with Ferrari and the Aston Martin F1 team.

The ongoing campaign is only nine rounds down, and there are still 14 Grand Prix events remaining on the 2023 F1 calendar. If Mercedes can continuously improve its weapon of choice, then there could arise an opportunity where Russell and Co. would be able to lock horns with even the mighty Red Bulls.
