Max Verstappen’s power unit purportedly underwent changes from Red Bull on Sunday morning, but the driver won’t face any consequences because of a rule modification that went into force earlier on in the season. Verstappen finished in 10th place at the Hungaroring during the qualifying session, which was his poorest performance of the season so far.

He reported “no power” when he set out on his second run, which caused the driver to drop to tenth place. Helmut Marko, Red Bull motorsport advisor, indicated on Saturday night that the team could need to replace some components of his engine, but that it would be done “without penalty.”

Formula 1 agreed to a shake – up of rules last month that would allow teams to switch out their engines for new models between qualification and the race. This entire process must adhere to the parc fermé regulations. Formerly, a pit lane start would have followed from this. These adjustments were apparently done on Sunday morning by Red Bull, who also worked on the DRS for the current World Champion. The team has not yet verified the modifications.

Verstappen enters the race in tenth place on the grid, but Marko is worried that the Hungaroring would make it tough for the driver to overtake other drivers. “Singapore, Monte Carlo and here in Hungary – these are the three tracks where you wouldn’t wish for something like that. We need a lot of luck in the race,” said Marko.

Marko did, however, uncover one advantage for Red Bull on a day when it felt like much was working against them: George Russell outqualified the Ferrari drivers. “Of course that’s positive for us, because he’s in front of the Ferraris. We will fight and see that we can get the maximum out of it,” added the 79-year-old.
