The central spectacle was pole-favorite Max Verstappen being forced to start from ninth on the grid. His teammate Sergio Perez secured the pole position, courtesy of a red flag in the closing minutes of the session.

Verstappen topped the time charts in Q1 and Q2. He looked set to take pole position at the expense of his teammate Perez, who had been enduring a torrid weekend on track. The new title challenger Perez, was miles off of his teammate’s pace in every session this weekend, a theme which recurred during qualifying. Christian Horner and Red Bull have openly declared their intent to allow the drivers to race each other for the title, insisting on no bias. But the fans are interpreting this huge gap in speed as sabotage from Red Bull, in favor of Verstappen.
