Report: Oscar Piastri’s future hangs in the balance at both Alpine and Williams

Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri is one of the drivers with the most potential. The Australian won the F3 and F2 championships consecutively and by August 2021 had already secured a seat at the Alpine F1 team as a reserve driver. Later, he also signed for McLaren in the same role.

Now, after staying on hold for a few months, the driver has started to build pressure on the Alpine’s team principal Otmar Szaufneuer for a seat on the grid. Oscar targeted the 40-year-old Fernando Alonso, whose contract ends this season.

However, as Otmar is looking for a seat for the Australian, troubles for Piastri have increased. As reported by Joe Saward in his recent blog, Alpine will be looking to offer Alonso an extension of two years. Which would mean that Piastri wouldn’t stay and would like to initiate a move to any other team on the grid. As per rumors, Williams is one of the potential teams for the 2021 F2 champion, but the deal seems to be in jeopardy now.

What’s troubling Oscar Piastri’s move to the Williams?

As Joe reports, a two-year deal for Piastri would be obvious, but with Mercedes‘ planned exit from Formula E, this year frees their driver and the competition’s champion and 2019 F2 champion, Nyck de Vries. Williams might consider the latter a better option given their plans to build their squad.

Oscar Piastri might also be looking for other teams if Williams doesn’t appear to be competitive. While the team is looking to replace Nicholas Latifi, Piastri might not consider himself right for the team, but that can only be speculated.

Overall, the Australian might end up not getting get a seat in the premier competition just yet and might have to wait a little longer than he would have wanted. However, with potential-filled up to the brim, hardly any team would like to miss upon him. With contracts starting to expire soon, he will be one of the most wanted on the grid.
